Interior Design Home Inspiration: A Complete Guide to Finding Inspiration for Your Luxury Custom Home

by Mia Schultz, Junior Designer

So you want to build a luxury custom home? Congrats! The very first step is finding inspiration to learn and communicate your personal style.  This is a fun and exciting step! It’s important to know what to look for when searching for luxury interior design ideas. There are many great resources for interior design; however, it can become a tad overwhelming at times. Narrowing down your inspiration photos and ideas is what will help your interior designer interpret your needs and desires to create a dream custom home that reflects your style & personality.

In our initial interior design meeting, as designers, we collect & gather your ideas & aesthetics and ask lots of questions about your personal life, technical details on your family’s dynamic, as well as color palettes & influences. Here at Alisha Taylor Interiors, we have a personalized process that helps us accurately interpret and understand your luxury home style!

Tips on Finding Inspiration:

  1. Our most important tip for how to find home inspiration for your luxury custom home is to have fun!
  2. If you like it, tag it, screenshot it, save it! Don’t worry that it’s a picture of a home not in our area, not in your budget, or doesn’t seem in line with other photos you’ve saved.  Your designer will make sense of what you love.
  3. Pinterest serves as an excellent resource for discovering inspiring photos to share with your designer, whether it’s a captivating color palette, eye-catching tiles, or entire home layouts that perfectly represent your style. Collecting these on a Pinterest board and sharing them with your designer will help bring the design patterns that stand out to you. Just Pin it & have fun!
  4. Social media can be another great tool for finding strong concepts of design. We recommend looking up specific style hashtags or referencing other designers that have caught your eye. Instagram is an effective space for designers to share updated work & projects. So feel free to screenshot and share them with us!
  5. Design blogs have a lot of insightful information & can get you thinking about topics & questions to refer to your designer. Research can never hurt! Blogs are also another great place that can showcase stunning designs.
  6. Digging through home décor magazines can be another effective source to find dream home inspiration. Magazines provide insight on the latest trends & resources while providing beautifully finished projects.
  7. Use keywords in your search. Some of our favorite design style keywords include Contemporary, Transitional, and Traditional. It also helps to add a color scheme in your search, such as Earthy tones, Blue/greens, Warm whites, and Dark earth tones. Discovering what specific styles best represent you will help narrow down searches to designs you see fit.

What Information to Share with Your Designer:

  • Information about your current home helps us learn what worked for you in the past, and what you would like to add moving forward. We can translate the traits you enjoyed about your previous home, while also determining what it needs!
  • Think of spaces that lack functionality in your current space. What kind of functions do you need in your new space? Whether it’s a second island, including a study room, or adding more drawers to your closet… the opportunities are endless! As designers, we assess the practicality of your luxury custom home and incorporate features that enhance the ease of daily activities within your home!
  • Learning about your favorite vacation destinations can serve as a rich source of inspiration for your designer, offering cues for creating a luxurious home that mirrors the ambiance, textures, and design elements reflective of your favorite getaways.
  • Exploring the aesthetics of your childhood home can also provide design insight for your interior designer. Reflecting on questions like where you grew up, the distinctive style of your childhood house, and envisioning the ideal lifestyle for your family now allows for a personalized and nostalgic approach. We like to do this to infuse your current home with a sense of familiarity and meaningful design elements.
  • When crafting a custom luxury home, it’s important to factor in your hosting needs, ensuring that the design aligns with your lifestyle. Anticipating the frequency and scale of gatherings you’re expecting to be had in this home, whether for holidays or regular events, allows for the creation of spaces that accommodate a space for welcoming & comfortable social interactions.

Have fun! Remember that this is your dream home, and it will all come together in the end. Having an interior designer means they will spend time with you to discuss the types of spaces and designs you need to create your dream home. Be transparent & allow your designer to fulfill those needs. Inspiration is made to be translated into a new design that best fits your custom luxury home! Understanding your dream home inspiration and bringing it to life is what your interior design team is here for.

Winchester EstateAt Alisha Taylor Interiors, every project has a unique story to tell. The journey from concept to creation is filled with choices that ultimately shape the identity of the home. Our Winchester Estate project tells the narrative where comfort meets tradition with a modern twist. Join us as our junior designer, Marti Diehl, sheds light on the inspiration and elements that breathe life into this homey project!

Drawing Inspiration: Crafting Tradition with a Contemporary Flair

For this project, the guiding factor was a combination of comfort, tradition, and modern aesthetics. The design direction was driven by the client’s desire for a haven that blends timeless elegance with modern functionality. Marti Diehl, Junior Designer, elaborates, “Our clients wanted a seamless harmony between traditional elements and updated features in their luxury new build. We accomplished this by pairing classic brass hardware & lighting with sleek cabinet designs, quartz countertops, and waterproof luxury vinyl plank flooring, ensuring not only beauty but also durability.”

A Symphony of Materials and Colors

The #WinchesterEstate’s material and color palette plays with a theme of soft neutral tones distributed with vibrant bursts of texture and color. The flooring, paint, and cabinetry choices establish a soothing foundation, while unexpected pops are discovered throughout the home. For example, the kitchen pantry doors steal the spotlight by using repurposed antique doors combined with fresh metal details to present a fusion of old and new.

Having evolved into the natural hosts for gatherings, they wanted to craft a luxury custom home that transcends the ordinary. This project prioritizes spaces that foster communal experiences. “For example, the great room with its seamless indoor/outdoor living concept pairs beautifully with the basement, home to an indoor sport court—an embodiment of their vision for a home that effortlessly blends recreation and function,” Marti Diehl, junior designer.

Interior Design Concepts: Development, Examples, and More

interior design concepts

We are pulling back the curtain a bit today and going deep into how a design develops in the office before you come to the design presentation and see all the beautiful drawings and material samples.

As designers, encompassing your favorite design styles is essential when it’s time to plan your new build or remodel. However, interior design is much more than simply following the latest design trends. There are several key interior design concepts that play vital roles in the design process of any space. Our team of professional interior designers is well acquainted with these concepts and knows just how to introduce them to your space with ease.

What Is An Interior Design Concept?

Interior design concepts are the big-picture building blocks of any room’s design.

These concepts are used as guides to make important design decisions such as what type of high-end flooring to use, what countertops to choose, what artisan piece of luxury furniture will make the space pop, and which dreamy drapery is best for a room.

Think of interior design concepts as elements that work together to create a cohesive and beautiful room. As your interior designer, we will use these concepts through the conceptual design phase to develop your vision and bring it to life.

The Development Process of Interior Design Concepts

You may be wondering, “How is a design concept developed?”. The process is different depending on the interior designer you work with, but in general, we will figure out what is needed to accomplish a beautiful design. We develop those concepts starting with ideas and thoughts and translate them into finishes, cabinetry design, and specific material selections.

Our Alisha Taylor Interiors team is full of design experts, but even we have our favorite interior design concepts! Read on to get a sneak peek into some of our preferred interior design concepts we love to work into our designs at Alisha Taylor.

Interior Design Concept Examples

Let’s take a look at some classic interior design concept examples prevalent in the design industry.

Balance

interior designing concept

Interior design balance is something that all designers pay very close attention to because it can make or break a space’s design. There are different ways to create a balanced look, including symmetry, asymmetry, and radial balance.

Symmetrical Balance is a traditional balance method that uses the same pieces on both sides of a room. For example, an interior designer may place the same small side table on either side of a bed for a cohesive style.

Asymmetrical Balance is less traditional and a more unique style that many may prefer. Instead of matching pieces on different sides of an object, asymmetry comes into play. You may see this in a design element such as placing a large mirror and a smaller painting on opposite sides of a fireplace.

Radial Balance is when items are distributed evenly around a central piece or focal point. This adds personality to a space and can be a great design concept to use for those with eye-catching staircases.

Focal Point

interior design concept examples

When you walk into a room, there’s always that one element that draws your eyes immediately. This is the focal point. A design must have at least one focal point to feel complete. And if there is more than one focal point you must make sure they don’t compete for attention. One should lead, one should then follow.

That classic four-post bed frame with a lovely duvet you’ve dreamed of in your master bedroom is a coveted focal point example. Other design elements would fall secondary to the bed frame since it is the emphasis of the room. Focal points can play a huge role in balancing a space.

Harmony

interior design concepts

Harmony is used to unite spaces in your home together. Your small details fall perfectly into place among the chosen furniture, creating a concept of cohesive serenity. Harmony works alongside balance to bring serenity and comfort to your home design.

Unique Details

interior designing concept

Unique details go a long way in luxury home design. Adding gold accents, a statement chandelier, or unique details such as an interesting ceiling can give your room that extra flair you desire. Never underestimate what those small details and finishes can do!

Rhythm

Rhythm consists of many different elements, including contrast, repetition, transition, and progression. Think of it as having a cohesiveness to your home design that flows gracefully from one room to the next. Rhythm can also appear in a single space, a way for your eye to flow from one element to the next.

interior design conceptsContrast is the art of placing opposing elements together, like choosing a dark-colored throw pillow for your lighter-colored lounge chair.

Repetition calls for specific pieces recurring throughout a space to create rhythm, such as using a color scheme or pattern across multiple rooms or design aspects.

Transition has to do with where your eyes naturally flow. Creating smooth transitions between spaces increases the balance and harmony of your home. An arched doorway is a stunning example of a transitional element that is smoother than the straight edges of a traditional door.

Progression occurs when you increase or decrease the number of items in a certain area, such as a cluster of candles or a collection of throw pillows.

Hopefully, you now have a better idea of what interior design concepts are and why they are important to a polished interior. Trust Alisha Taylor to be your interior designer and rest assured your home will meet the guidelines that these interior design concepts provide.

What to Consider When Accessorizing

Accessorizing plays a pivotal role when it comes to curating the perfect ambiance for your luxury custom home! Elevating your living space from ordinary to extraordinary requires careful consideration of various elements that harmonize with your home’s design and style.

Here are some key points we, as a luxury interior design firm, like to ponder when accessorizing our luxury custom homes:

Harmonizing Color Palette

A color palette is the foundation of any well-designed space. When selecting accessories, we ensure they complement the existing hues within your design. While neutral tones like white, black, and beige provide a sophisticated backdrop, we don’t shy away from incorporating strategic pops of color. These vibrant accents infuse energy and visual allure into our living spaces!

The Power of Artwork

Luxury homes thrive on the presence of exquisite artwork. Curating a collection of distinctive and captivating pieces that resonate with the aesthetic, highlights these masterpieces in prominent areas. This allows them to serve as conversation starters and focal points that exude refined taste!

accessorizing luxury homes

Layering and Proportion

Layering textures, patterns, and materials is an art that adds depth and intrigue to luxury homes. Understanding the significance of proportion by considering the size of accessories in relation to the room’s dimensions is crucial. In spacious areas, we like to embrace larger, statement pieces, while smaller rooms can be adorned with delicate embellishments. Often we will integrate a medley of textures, from sumptuous fabrics to sleek metals, to create a multi-dimensional environment!

layering pillows

Embracing Nature

Plants and greenery introduce life and vitality to interiors. Potted plants, succulents, and floral arrangements seamlessly blend with luxury settings, infusing a sense of tranquility and organic beauty. The juxtaposition of nature against luxurious decor creates a harmonious balance that is visually stunning!

Textile Touches

Textiles play a pivotal role in enhancing comfort and warmth in a space. Typically, we soften living spaces with plush pillows, luxurious throws, and elegant drapery. These elements not only provide function but also contribute to an inviting atmosphere that defines luxury living!

using textiles

Incorporating these accessorizing considerations into your approach to accessorizing will transform your luxury custom home into a stunning showcase of elegance and ensure that every corner of your space reflects your unique personality and sophisticated taste. In the intricate tapestry of luxury home design, the right accessories are the threads that weave together comfort, beauty, and individuality, culminating in a truly custom & luxurious masterpiece!

In crafting the stunning aesthetics of #ModernSunset, precise attention was given to the material choices resulting in a breathtaking design. Both the interior and exterior walls feature pockets of the elegant Harvest Mix Ashlar from Solstice Stone imparting a sense of natural beauty to the space. Inside the great room wet bar, we achieved an interplay of textures with dark wood-stained cabinetry and metal mesh backing on open shelves adding a touch of intrigue and sophistication.

Throughout the majority of the home, we combined the durable and sleek porcelain tile in the Crest Natural finish from Facings of America with the inviting European Oak wood flooring by D&M, integrating the interiors with the breathtaking 180-degree views of the surrounding landscape.

The kitchen took center stage, featuring a striking backsplash from Craftsman Court Ceramics called Artistic Tile in the shade, Cloud, perfectly complementing the space’s overall elegance. This remarkable kitchen was surrounded by two types of countertops, Cambria’s Winterbourne Quartz and Brittanicca Warm Quartz adding a touch of luxury to the culinary hub. In the great room, an impressive fireplace moment became a focal point. Enhanced by the bold contrast of Arizona Tile’s Metropolis Dark Quartz, the contrast added a touch of contemporary flair to the space. The thoughtful selection of these materials, from the natural stone wall to the fine finishes and luxurious countertops, showcases #ModernSunset’s commitment to beauty, durability, and a seamless fusion of design elements.

Moving to the dining area, a striking and commanding chandelier from Hubbardton Forge hangs above the custom-made dining table by Peter Thomas Designs, creating an elegant space for gatherings and special occasions.

The kitchen, being the heart of the home, was thoughtfully designed with functionality and style in mind. Two Jamie Young Co gunmetal pendants dangle gracefully over the sink island, adding a touch of industrial charm to the culinary space. Solid vs. Engineered Hardwood Flooring

hardwood flooring analysis

When it comes to luxury custom homes, the choice of flooring plays a significant role in defining the aesthetic appeal and overall elegance of the space. Solid hardwood flooring and engineered hardwood flooring are two popular options that offer their own unique advantages. By understanding their similarities, and differences, and weighing the pros and cons, clients can make an informed decision that best suits their needs and preferences. Let’s explore the details!

Solid Hardwood Flooring

Solid hardwood flooring is the epitome of timeless beauty. Crafted from solid planks of natural wood, it has been a popular choice for centuries and continues to be a sought-after option for luxury custom homes.

Pros of Solid Hardwood

  • Authenticity and Beauty: Solid hardwood flooring exudes natural beauty, showcasing the unique grain patterns, textures, and colors of the wood species, adding warmth and character to any space.
  • Durability and Longevity: Solid hardwood floors are known for their exceptional durability and longevity. With proper care and maintenance, they can last for generations, retaining their beauty and charm.
  • Refinishing Potential: One of the significant advantages of solid hardwood is its ability to be sanded and refinished multiple times. This allows homeowners to restore its original appearance and address any wear or damage that may occur over time.

Cons of Solid Hardwood

  • Cost: Solid hardwood flooring tends to be more expensive than engineered hardwood due to the higher cost of sourcing and manufacturing solid wood planks.
  • Susceptibility to Moisture: Solid hardwood is prone to expansion and contraction when exposed to moisture, making it less suitable for areas with high humidity or moisture-prone spaces like bathrooms and basements.

Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Engineered hardwood flooring is a versatile and popular choice, offering a blend of natural wood and modern technology. It consists of a thin layer of real wood veneer on top of several layers of plywood or high-density fiberboard (HDF).

Pros of Engineered Hardwood

  • Stability and Moisture Resistance: Engineered hardwood is less prone to moisture-related issues and provides better stability than solid hardwood, making it suitable for a wider range of environments, including basements and areas with fluctuating humidity levels.
  • Wide Range of Installation Options: Engineered hardwood can be installed as a floating floor, glued down, or nailed, allowing for greater flexibility and ease of installation.
  • Cost-Effective: Engineered hardwood is often more affordable than solid hardwood, providing a budget-friendly alternative without compromising on the natural wood aesthetic.

Cons of Engineered Hardwood

  • Limited Refinishing Potential: Engineered hardwood has a limited number of times it can be sanded and refinished due to the thin veneer layer. This makes it less suitable for extensive refinishing compared to solid hardwood.
  • Appearance Variations: While engineered hardwood aims to replicate the look of solid hardwood, some may find that it lacks the same depth and authenticity of natural wood.

As interior designers, we possess extensive knowledge and experience in selecting flooring materials, including hardwood options. We understand the importance of functionality and space planning. So we consider factors such as foot traffic, room usage, and lifestyle requirements to help you choose hardwood flooring that not only looks stunning but also performs well in different areas of your luxury custom home!

Creating a kitchen that is both functional and visually appealing requires careful consideration when choosing the perfect countertop. With a wide range of options available, it can be challenging to find the ideal fit. To help you make sense of the choices, let’s explore the breakdown of marble, granite, and quartz countertops. This comparison will enable you to select a surface that aligns with your lifestyle and aesthetic preferences.

Explore the Countertop Options

Transform your kitchen into a space worth admiring with a standout countertop. Below we will discuss the cost, maintenance, and durability of quartz, granite, and marble. As we delve into each option, envision how it would complement your dream kitchen!

Granite Countertops

Let’s explore the beauty of granite, a stunning natural stone that you may have come across in design and architectural magazines. Granite has the remarkable ability to enhance a kitchen with timeless elegance. Its unique appearance arises from the composition of tightly packed minerals, resulting in a one-of-a-kind look for each piece. As a natural material mined and transformed into slabs, no two granite countertops are alike.

When designing a luxurious kitchen, granite offers a plethora of choices. Whether you prefer understated slabs that enhance the room or eye-catching options that become the centerpiece, granite provides versatility.

  • Durability: Granite is appreciated for its strength. This resilient stone is water-resistant, scratch-resistant, and not prone to chipping. It also withstands exposure to heat without warping or blistering. Thanks to its durability, granite countertops are a long-lasting choice.
  • Cost: Determining the cost of granite versus quartz or marble countertops involves several factors. Generally, granite prices range from $45 to $200 per square foot. The cost depends on factors such as the manufacturer, stone grade, and complexity of installation.
  • Maintenance: Regular maintenance for granite involves using a nonabrasive cleaner to keep it clean. Additionally, granite is porous and requires periodic resealing, typically every six months to a year.

Quartz Countertops

Our exploration of countertops continues with quartz, another sleek and versatile option. When your kitchen features elegant fixtures, a beautiful backsplash, and other delightful details, a subtle quartz countertop complements the overall aesthetic.

Quartz countertops offer clean and understated looks, but they can also have a textured appearance, depending on the manufacturing process. Coarsely ground quartz results in a flecked appearance, while finely ground quartz produces a smooth-looking slab. Unlike granite, quartz countertops are a blend of natural minerals, man-made resins and polymers, and colorings. Typically, quartz countertops consist of 90-95% quartz and 5-10% man-made materials.

Due to its blending capabilities and various manufacturing methods, quartz provides more options in terms of color and finish compared to granite and marble. This versatility makes quartz an excellent choice for creating a specific look in your luxury kitchen.

  • Durability: Quartz is the most durable countertop material on this list. It is highly resistant to scratches, cracks, and chips. Additionally, quartz possesses stain-resistant qualities that marble and granite lack. However, it is not as heat-resistant as its natural stone counterparts.
  • Cost: Quartz countertops typically range from $55 to $155 per square foot. The price is influenced by factors such as stone grade, source, and installation complexity.
  • Maintenance: Quartz countertops are a low-maintenance and beautiful option. Unlike granite and marble, quartz is nonporous and does not require resealing to maintain its pristine appearance.

Marble Countertops

There’s no denying the beauty that marble countertops bring to a luxury kitchen. This striking stone can breathe life into any culinary space. Let’s delve deeper into the characteristics of marble countertops.

Marble is formed when limestone undergoes extreme heat and pressure, resulting in a recrystallized structure. Unlike granite, which displays grains and speckles, marble has a larger “pattern” that gives it a distinct appearance. Each piece of marble features veins that vary in color, ranging from gray to blue to red and more, depending on the slab. While gleaming white marble is a popular choice, there is a range of color options, including charcoal, green, and tan, allowing for a diverse color palette in your dream kitchen.

  • Durability: Marble is softer than granite, making it more susceptible to scratches and dents. However, like granite, marble is heat-resistant. It is essential to promptly clean up spills and messes to preserve the appearance of marble, as it can easily stain.
  • Cost: When comparing the cost of quartz versus marble, there is a noticeable difference. Marble prices typically range from $75 to $250 per square foot. The type of marble significantly influences the price, with Calacatta marble, known for its dramatic and luxurious look, commanding a higher price tag.
  • Maintenance: Marble is a porous surface, requiring regular maintenance to prevent staining and damage. Applying sealant every three to six months is necessary to maintain the beauty of marble. If you are willing to manage regular upkeep, marble can be a viable option.

Go Behind the Design for our #DesertCharmRemodel project that captures the essence of the desert, intertwining its rugged allure

with a touch of enchanting elegance

Our objective was to transform this home into a warm and welcoming retreat, evoking the charm and coziness of a farmhouse while infusing it with eclectic elements for a touch of individuality. From rustic textures to vibrant pops of color and unexpected decor, this remodel project embodies the perfect fusion of farmhouse allure and eclectic character.

THE DESIGN DIRECTION

The design direction for our #DesertCharmRemodel project was inspired by a blend of farmhouse and eclectic styles. The goal was to create a show house with a cozy farmhouse feel, and seamlessly blend the interiors to the existing southwestern style of the exterior, as this is a remodel project. The design incorporated warm desert tones, with pops of green and eclectic furniture, artwork, and tiles to add a unique and vibrant touch.

FARMHOUSE & ECLECTIC MATERIALS

The specific materials and color palettes used throughout the project were carefully chosen to align with the desired design styles. Warm desert tones were utilized, including earthy browns and sandy beiges, to reflect the surrounding environment. These warm tones were complemented by pops of green, deep blues, and gray for a vibrant touch. We mixed in a variety of textures and patterns incorporated through the funky furniture, artwork, and tiles to add an eclectic vibe!

WE CAN’T WAIT FOR…

Our Junior Designer on the project expressed that she is, “particularly thrilled about the great room design, especially the highlighted wine refrigerator positioned adjacent to the fireplace”. This area showcases a harmonious fusion of millwork, stone, decorative tiles, and quartz, resulting in one of the most prominent focal points throughout the entire home.

Our clients also expressed their desire for a dedicated space where their young grandkids could grow and flourish. In response, “We created a captivating built-in bunk system within one of the bedrooms, evoking a sense of excitement and nostalgia reminiscent of my own childhood.”

WHY OUR CLIENTS WANTED TO REMODEL THEIR LUXURY HOME

Our #DesertCharmRemodel clients decided to remodel to create a show house with a cozy farmhouse feel, combining their love for farmhouses and eclectic styles. They desired a space that would reflect their unique personalities and offer a warm, inviting environment.
